Petal

The Petal Menstrual Cup is a solution to the pervasive problem of blood spillage when using a traditional menstrual cup.

the menstrual cup has quite literally revolutionized my period experience, but now the menstrual cup needs to be revolutionized

Background

In their lifetime, the average menstruating person uses almost 17,000 tampons or pads

The Environment

Pads and tampons end up in landfills before they break down into microplastics that pollute oceans, rivers, beaches and contaminate our water supply.

While tampon applicators are made of recyclable materials, they aren’t accepted because they’re considered medical waste.

The Menstrual Cup

While the menstrual cup is a fantastic modern innovation, people are hesitant to use one because they are afraid of spilling blood. The menstrual cup has much room for improvement

The User

“I try to use a menstrual cup...but I always spill the blood...or the blood gets all over my hands. I can’t have blood all over my hands in my office’s communal bathroom!”

- Mel W.

How the User Feels

How might we design a more seamless and easier menstrual cup experience?

Ideation

Ideating around inner ledges inspired by bromeliad leaves.

How to use the petal menstrual cup.

Taking inspiration from bromeliad leaves, which help the plants collect water into their central tank, where they derive nutrients from and store them for later.
